How to Reach Shergaon: Complete Travel Guide (By Air, Train & Road)

Shergaon is a hidden gem in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. Although it feels remote, reaching Shergaon is easier than most people expect. Here is a complete travel guide on how to reach Shergaon.

Nearest Airport

The nearest airports are:

  • Tezpur Airport (Assam) — around 5–6 hours by road
  • Guwahati International Airport (Assam) — around 7–8 hours by road

From either airport you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab towards Shergaon.

Nearest Railway Station

  • Rangapara North / Tezpur (Assam) are the closest convenient railheads.
  • Guwahati Railway Station is the major hub with trains from across India.

By Road

Shergaon is well-connected by road. The common route is:

Guwahati / Tezpur → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Rupa → Shergaon

The drive offers spectacular views of the Himalayan foothills, rivers and forests. Roads are mostly good, but it is best to travel during daylight.

Inner Line Permit (ILP)

Indian tourists need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. You can apply for it online through the official Arunachal Pradesh ILP portal, or get it at designated counters. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).

Tip: Apply for your ILP a few days before your trip to avoid last-minute delays.

Best Way to Travel

  • A private taxi from Tezpur or Guwahati is the most comfortable option.
  • Shared sumos / cabs are available and cheaper.
